The French Connection

In this course, the British arrive in Acadia and New France. We follow the events of:

  • The treaty of Utrecht and the French-Indian Wars
  • The dispersion of the Acadians
  • The conquest of Quebec
  • The influx of Anglicans, Presbyterians and Methodists and their influence on establishing a ‘Protestant ethos’.

This course identifies world events which motivated the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Upper- and Lower- Canada to seek strength in unity.


  • The War of 1812
  • The Upper Canada Rebellion (1837)
  • The Lower Canada Rebellion (1838)
  • The American Civil War (1861 -1865)


And other world events which showed their vulnerability.

  • What were the initial relationships between the French Huguenots and the Natives?
  • When and how did the relationships between settlers and Natives change?
  • What were the successes in relationship IN SPITE of their challenges?
  • What were the failures in their relationships BECAUSE OF their challenges?
